WATCH: Vancouver’s 4th annual Diner En Blanc event has a rival down the block and as Jeremy Hunka reports, it’s pitting black against white for public picnic rights.
Two events had Vancouverites dining al fresco Tuesday night, but with decidedly different approaches.
Diner en Blanc hosted 4,000 people dressed in white who either prepared their own picnics or dined on food from famed chef David Hawksworth.
With thousands of people on a wait list to get tickets, the event prides itself on exclusivity.
A rival event took place in nearby Crab Park. Ce Soir Noir is a free event where no invitation is necessary. Its Facebook page describes it as an “ad-hoc, barely-even-organized, family-friendly event.”
“We just wanted it to be a little bit more inclusive and not charge anyone to come down to a park and do what they would do there anyway, which is have a picnic,” said organizer George Vergette.”
The event’s Facebook page showed that more than 2,000 people said they would attend, but as anyone who has planned an event on Facebook can tell you, the number of people who actually show up could be substantially smaller.
Those in attendance were asked to wear black and bring their own food as well as a non-perishable food item for donation.
