WATCH: Manitoba family calls donated service dog a lifesaver

ROSS — A seizure detection dog has changed one Manitoba family’s lives in many ways.

3-year-old Keanna Barbour suffers from a severe form of epilepsy which can cause her to have roughly 10 seizures a week.

Two months ago, MSAR Search and Rescue Association (formerly known as the Manitoba Search and Rescue Association) donated a seizure detection dog to the family free of charge.

Keanna calls Jerry her new best friend.

Barbour said she used to have to sleep in the same bed as Keanna in case she had a seizure in the middle of the night. Now Jerry will alert her by licking her feet and barking if Keanna needs help.

“For the first time in three years I’m sleeping in my own bed,” said Barbour.

The family hosted a yard sale at the Ross Community Centre over the weekend to raise funds for the dog. Although it was donated, there are still many expenses associated with Jerry like multiple kennels, his vest, regular check ups and registration fees.

If you would like to help out the family donations can be made on their GoFundMe page.
