Calgarian’s Cowboy BBQ Beans chip flavour featured in Lay’s contest

WATCH ABOVE: Calgarian Brenda Boghean joins Global Calgary with details on her submission for Lay’s Canada’s annual Do Us a Flavour contest.

CALGARY – A Calgarian is among the final four in Lay’s Canada’s annual Do Us a Flavour Tastes of Canada contest.

Contestants were asked to come up with a potato chip recipe idea based on their favourite food and the Canadian region that inspired it.

Brenda Boghean says the inspiration for her Cowboy BBQ Beans flavour was rodeo food from the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

“I was trying to think of something that would inspire me, and I thought what better than the Calgary Stampede,” said Boghean. “I starting thinking of foods that you would eat during Stampede time, and I thought ‘beans… barbeque sauce… beef… sounds good to me.'”

Boghean said she discovered she was a finalist in the contest back in April, but was sworn to secrecy.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I could only tell one person, so I told my husband. I’ve had to keep it a secret since then.”

“I actually took a trip to Toronto in July to meet the other finalists,” added Boghean. “I wasn’t able to tell anyone why I was going to Toronto, so I told my work I was going to go visit friends, and I told my family that I was going to for work.”

The Calgary mother says she is proud of how her flavour turned out.

“They have a huge process that they go through to create the chips.. they actually create the dish, and then they try to mimic the flavours.”

The three other flavours which are currently available in stores for a limited time, are:

  • Butter Chicken on Lay’s Original by Darryl Francispillai of Mississauga, Ont.
  • Montreal Smoked Meat on Lay’s Original by Zdravko Gunjevic of Waterloo, Ont.
  • PEI Scalloped Potatoes on Lay’s Original by Jordan Cairns of Burlington, Ont.

Voting to determine the top chip flavour runs until September 30. Canadians can vote at Lays.ca/Flavour, on Twitter or Instagram, or by text.
