WINNIPEG — Manitobans heading to beaches on Lake Winnipeg this week may not like what they see.
Residents at Hillside Beach were alarmed by a high amount of algae blooms over the weekend. Conservation Manitoba says most of it has cleared but beach goers should keep water safety in mind the next few days as the beaches fill up.
“People are more mindful when they see algae, but pets aren’t the same way,” Nicole Armstrong said. “If you can see algae blooms in the water it’s better to not let your pets swim.”
Conservation Manitoba also advised that if there are ecoli warnings to wash your hands before eating and not swallow the water.
There are currently no warnings for Lake Winnipeg but they can be checked here on the province’s website.
Hillside Beach is near Victoria Beach, about 110 km northeast of Winnipeg on the east side of Lake Winnipeg.
