LETHBRIDGE – Bringing the Stanley Cup home was not the only privilege Kris Versteeg had this week.
The City of Lethbridge presented him with the Key to the City.
“It’s a huge honour. Obviously I’m very excited,” he said.
It is the highest award an individual can receive from a municipal government, recognizing the contributions of outstanding citizens.

“I’ve very proud to be from here,” he added. “I try to do as much as I can for kids and youth hockey. When that’s noticed, it makes me feel pretty good. I hope I can keep doing it.”
Mayor Chris Spearman said Versteeg has been a great role modern for younger athletes.
“It just goes to show young hockey players in Lethbridge they too can succeed, if they put in the time and perseverance you can become excellent at your sport,” he explained. “We wanted to give Kris the key to the city to recognize that it’s possible to become an exceptional athlete in Lethbridge.”
Growing up in the city, Versteeg played minor hockey. He then went on to play for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and eventually made his way to the NHL. He’s won two Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks, in 2010 and 2015.
