VERNON — Interested in being the extra eyes and ears of the RCMP? If so, the Vernon and North Okanagan Detachment of the RCMP want to hear from you.
Recruitment is underway for the RCMP volunteer program. Candidates will have classroom training in Vernon from September 21 to 25 and work under the supervision of the Crime Prevention Coordinator, Regan Borisenko, and RCMP.
“For more than 25 years, this community-based volunteer group has helped to minimize the amount of crime occurring throughout Vernon,” says Borisenko. “RCMP volunteers are extra eyes and ears for the Vernon and North Okanagan RCMP. The program provides a valuable crime prevention service to our community.”

Leading up to the training, volunteers undergo interviews, a security screening process and are given an opportunity to specify their program interests.
Borisenko says to become a volunteer, an applicant must:
- be between the ages of 19 and 79 years of age
- have no criminal record
- pass a comprehensive security screening conducted by the RCMP
- successfully complete the RCMP Volunteer Training Program
Borisenko says 60 volunteers put in more than 5,069 volunteer hours last year, worked close to 300 patrol shifts, issued 182 Crime Prevention Notices, helped RCMP issue more than 70 warnings for using an electronic device while driving and were responsible for eight arrests. Interested candidates can contact Borisenko by phone (250-550-7847) or by e mailing rborisenko@vernon.ca.
