Taxi drivers take matters into their own hands, egg Uber cars

MONTREAL – Just when you thought the war between taxi drivers and Uber was cooling down…there were eggs.

On Sunday, a group of taxi drivers armed with two dozen eggs stormed up to two UberX drivers and pelted their cars with eggs.

The six taxi drivers, whose identities are not known, apparently threw the eggs while yelling “Uber is illegal.”

Jean-Nicolas Guillemette, General Manager at Uber Montreal said the company was shocked when they heard about the incident.

“Violence is never an option or a solution,” he said.

Guillemette insisted the group was trying to intimidate the UberX drivers.

Dani Atallah, Vice-President of the Regroupement de Proprietaires de Taxis de Montreal, told Global News he does not encourage the actions by the taxi drivers, but he does understand why they are doing it.

“The Transport Minister should start invoking more sanctions against Uber,” said Atallah.

“The effort by the Minister is not enough. Taxi drivers are taking things into their own hands.”

Until now, no police report has been filed by the UberX drivers, but Guillemette said he will meet with the drivers that were assaulted and if they decide to go to the police, he will support them.

“There are hundreds of thousands of Montrealers downloading the app on their phone and using the service on a monthly basis,” he said.

“This is a service people really want and we hope that the government will listen to that.”
