TORONTO – A dramatic rescue was caught on camera recently when a California man had to be pulled from his damaged car mere seconds before a train demolished it.

The unidentified man, who police say may have been intoxicated, was involved in a collision with a crossing guard at a set of rail tracks in Sunnyvale, just outside San Jose.

Two nearby deputies who heard the accident, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, quickly recognized a train was coming and rushed over to assist.

Cellphone video that captured the incident showed a Caltrain smash its way past the car just seconds after the officer and unidentified man reach safety.

“These deputies did not hesitate,” Sheriff Salvador Zuno said. “I believe, because they reacted, this person is alive today.”

The incident remains under investigation.
