Fire rips through rural home near Balzac

WATCH ABOVE: Firefighters are investigating what sparked a blaze near Balzac on Friday.

CALGARY – One man was rushed to hospital after escaping a house fire near Balzac on Friday.

Emergency crews were called to Township Road 262A, just north of CrossIron Mills, around 12:30 a.m.

By the time firefighters arrived, the house where the fire originated was already engulfed in flames.

One man was at home when the fire started. Crews say he was alerted to the blaze by a smoke detector.

He was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The Chief of Rocky View Fire Services says fires in rural areas often present challenges, but they were able to access a nearby water source to help fight Friday’s blaze.

“We’re lucky that this is a long panhandled driveway,” said Monty Armstrong. “We do have a water source nearby…we have more challenging areas in Rocky View County, but today we’re very fortunate.”

The outside of the house suffered significant fire damage, while the inside had smoke damage.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
