Real estate agent warns of Kijiji scam

A Saskatoon real estate agent is warning users of a scam on the popular on-line site Kijiji that made use of her name.

Kari Calder says a scam artist took a home she had listed for sale and instead made up an ad that listed the house as for rent.

The scammer then asks for a $1,000 deposit to be wired to them.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

What made the ad seem legitimate is the use of her name in e-mails.

“They’ve started up a couple of email addresses using my name,” said Calder.

Former Saskatoon police detective Sgt. Brian Trainor says that is unusual.

“This scam is a little different than what I’ve seen over the last 12 years or so,” said Trainor in that the scammers are using an e-mail address with Calder’s name.

Saskatoon police have been notified and the ad has been removed from Kijiji.

Experts are warning people to be aware of higher levels of scams as predators are upping their game in an effort to cheat people out of money.
