UPDATE: 21-year-old involved in random Abbotsford pellet gun attacks faces 14 charges

WATCH: Nine people in the Abbotsford area have been hit with pellets. Nadia Stewart reports.

UPDATE: 21-year-old Harpreet Singh Vaid has been charged in relation to the pellet gun attacks in Abbotsford in August. Vaid faces seven counts of discharging an air gun with intent to injure and seven counts of assault with a weapon.

Police in Abbotsford are calling it a “crime of opportunity” following 17 reports of pellet gun attacks in the city within a 10-day span.

Investigators believe one person–possibly even a duo-is driving around Abbotsford firing a pellet gun randomly at pedestrians, houses and cars. So far, nine people have been injured including Gail Evans, who was hit Sunday evening while out for her evening stroll.

“He had just a very serious expression on his face, you know. Out, doing his business kind of thing. Very determined. Popped three pops and sped on down the road,” said Evans.

Police say there have been 17 incidents reported since July 18. Most of the incidents occurred in central Abbotsford, though there are a few outliers.

“When we start looking at the victims and the things that have been shot at, it seems to be completely random. From vehicles, to the sides of homes, to the front windows of homes,” said Cst. Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police.

The only thing that has been consistent is the description of the suspect vehicle: a dark-coloured sedan. Investigators believe the suspect or suspects could be driving a 2001-2006 Chrysler Sebring, as it was captured on security video in two of the attacks.

Investigators are still trying to figure out a motive.

“We haven’t precluded the possibility that there could be some kind of game going. Maybe there’s a small group of individuals using the same car or similar types of cars and actively looking for targets to shoot,” said MacDonald.

The person firing the pellet gun is being described as an 18- to 25-year-old male.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Abbotsford Police.
