Spike belt deployed to catch Kelowna car thief

KELOWNA – One person was arrested this morning after RCMP tracked a stolen vehicle as it traveled all the way from Vernon to Kelowna. The stolen car was spotted in Vernon Wednesday morning. Police tracked its progress to Glenmore Rd. where they put out a spike belt near the Glenmore Landfill.

The spike belt deflated the car’s tires but that didn’t stop the driver from continuing down Glenmore Rd. and into Kelowna where residents in the Clifton Rd. area noticed the commotion.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I was trying to back out the driveway and this car came flying up the road, smoking and making a bunch of noise,” says resident Mike Walraven.

The driver ended up taking off on foot, jumping over a fence and running through yards.

“I heard the dogs barking this morning and I looked out my bathroom window and I just saw a guy leaping over the fence,” says Elinor Sobon. “I came outside and asked one of the officers what was going on and he [was] getting his assault rifle ready and he said, ‘Get back in the house.’”
