A lion on the lam? Milwaukee residents looking out for mysterious creature

WATCH ABOVE: Milwaukee police on alert after “lion-like” animal spotted.

There’s something roaming the streets of Milwaukee. No one knows what it is, but the apparently “catlike animal” has been wandering the Wisconsin city for nearly a week without being caught, only giving the enthralled public sporadic sightings.

But the random nature of the creature’s appearances hasn’t stopped everyone from speculating about what it could be.

The New York Times deemed the creature news fit to print Tuesday, publishing a story rife with local residents’ reaction to the four-legged creature skulking through the city.

The Times quoted Annie Nolen, a resident of the Milwaukee neighbourhood Brewers Hill, who claims to have seen the animal “slinking along a fence in her backyard.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I couldn’t move,” Ms. Nolen told the newspaper. “I thought, what am I looking at?”

The Chicago Tribune as well wrote a story about the “Lion mystery brewing in Milwaukee” and gave it front-page coverage.

There are some hypotheses about what it might be. The New York Times reported it could be a young African lion which was bought by a local resident and released when it became too big to handle.

The Milwaukee County Zoo also pointed out on Twitter that it isn’t missing any lions.

Whatever it is, it’s motivated an intense search involving the Milwaukee Police Department, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and local wildlife officials.

And like with every other passing viral phenomenon, a hashtag and parody twitter account has popped up.

And the parody twitter account, @MilwaukeeLion, has become a bastion for jokes about the animal.
