‘Barney’s Version,’ ‘The King’s Speech’ win TIFF Film Circuit awards

TORONTO – “Barney’s Version” and “The King’s Speech” have won TIFF’s 2011 Film Circuit People’s Choice Awards, now into their seventh year.

Audiences across Canada who took in Film Circuit screenings last year voted “Barney’s Version” best Canuck film and “The King’s Speech” best international feature of 2010.

Film Circuit is an outreach program that aims to bring films and their talent to audiences that may not otherwise have access to Canadian and international cinema.

“Barney’s Version,” directed by Richard J. Lewis, is based on Mordecai Richler’s novel and stars Paul Giamatti as cantankerous Barney Panofsky. It won several Genie Awards and was nominated for an Oscar for best makeup.

“The King’s Speech,” directed by Tom Hooper, stars Colin Firth as the stammering King George VI. It won four Oscars, including best picture.

Both films screened at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
