Kayaker pronounced dead after capsizing in Lower Prospect

HALIFAX- A 67-year-old man is dead after falling out of his kayak and losing consciousness this afternoon in Lower Prospect, N.S.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called around 2 p.m. to Wreck Cove in Lower Prospect — a seaside village about 30 Km from Halifax.

A man was reported to be kayaking with a group of six or seven others when he fell from his boat.

He went unconscious as he was attempting to get back into the kayak.

His companions managed to get him out of the water and began performing CPR, but the area where they came ashore was too remote for rescuers to access.

“They got him out of the water,” said Division Commander Scott Shaffner with Halifax Regional Fire. “It was quite an ordeal to get him out of the water and begin CPR. It took our crews 10 or 15 minutes to get here.”

A boat had to be used to bring the man to an ambulance waiting on Lower Prospect Road.

But despite efforts to revive him, paramedics pronounced the man dead.

Halifax RCMP are investigating the incident.
