Regina – On the heels of last week’s collision that killed two people, the first steps of construction on Regina’s bypass project are underway.

Survey work and test drilling for overpasses has begun near Tower Road on Highway 1.

Statistics from 2013 show Highway 1 near Balgonie sees more collisions than any other stretch of highway in the province.

The east overpasses have been prioritized.

“The work that is going on right now, this was planned long before the most recent accident,” said Joel Cherry with the Ministry of Highways. “But in general, we’re expediting the construction of the overpasses east of Regina because of the increased traffic along there and because of the collisions that happened.”

The entire project should be complete by fall 2019. But, the three overpasses planned for Tower Road, White City and Balgonie are set to be in use by fall 2017.
