Agencies scaling back as Sask. wildfire situation stabilizes

SASKATOON – Multiple agencies helping with the wildfire situation in Saskatchewan are scaling back operations. Officials said they expect the number of evacuees to drop into the double digits by the middle of the week.

There are 2,862 people currently receiving services and officials say 28 buses are expected to take more people back home to their communities today.

The majority of evacuation orders have been lifted across northern Saskatchewan as crews stabilize the situation.

However, the “Stowers” fire, which is not yet contained, is five kilometres southwest of La Ronge and continues to threaten the communities of Hall Lake and Clam Crossing.

The “Egg” fire, which surrounds the north end of La Ronge airport and is 1.5 kilometres west of the community, is currently 96,200 hectares in size and not yet contained.

Another fire that is not contained is the “Lynx” fire, which is 22 kilometres southwest of Stanley Mission and 6.7 kiliometres northeast of Sucker River.

The 4,100 hectare wildfire by Montreal Lake, the “MLIR13” fire, is now contained.

More than 1,000 personnel are still assigned to fire duties, including 200 members of the Canadian Forces, who are expected to leave the province after today.

Officials said air support units from outside the province have been released. There are currently 60 helicopters providing aerial assistance.

As of Monday morning, 98 wildfires were burning in the province, bringing the total number this year to 646, compared to 235 in the same period last year.
