MONTREAL – Operation Adoption is underway in Montreal with hundreds of rescue cats and dogs looking for loving and permanent homes.

The adoption blitz is an initiative of the Montreal SPCA in partnership with the city of Montreal.

Every year during the moving season, despite sensitization programs, hundreds of pets are left behind by their owners.

The numbers of abandoned pets at the Montreal SPCA can nearly triple from 600 to 1600, during the months of June and July.

Operation Adoption aims to facilitate the adoption of 120 animals during the two-day adoption clinic.

Organizers say that many people don’t realize that adopting a shelter animal is often cheaper than buying a pet at the store or even getting one for free, once you factor in the costs of vaccines, sterilization, microchips and deworming treatments.

As an extra incentive, the city is offering a $25 starter kit to each person who adopts a cat or dog during the two-day event, which ends on Saturday.

Counselors will be on hand at the  Montreal SPCA at 5215 Jean-Talon West  and the SPCA Annexe at 7314 Mountain Sights Ave., to help anyone interested in finding just the right furry friend.
