Mother shocked to find offensive stickers about autistic son on her car

TORONTO – A Utah mom says she shocked and hurt after finding stickers bearing offensive comments attached to the windshield of her car.

Eliese Livingston says she uses a windshield sticker to let others know that her son, Kyler, is autistic and may have difficulty interacting with others.

It reads: “Autistic child may not respond to verbal commands.” But on Tuesday night she says she found more stickers stuck to the windshield of her car as it was parked in the front driveway of her Sandy, Utah home.

They read “Spoiled brat” and “Undisciplined”, and “Unetitled”.

For those keeping score at home: that last one isn’t actually a word, which adds several layers of amusing irony to this otherwise disgusting tale.

“I feel like they were attacking autistic children in general,” Livingston told KSL News in Salt Lake City.

“It’s just appalling, all of it. He will struggle for his entire life and people want to make fun of it?”

Livingston says her five-year-old son has been diagnosed with three autistic disorders, afflictions that make it difficult for him to interact with others or communicate verbally.

“I have no idea what he’s saying and he doesn’t know what I’m saying,” Livingston said. “Autism is definitely a challenge.”

She said she canvassed the neighbourhood trying to find the culprit of the insulting messages, and also filed a police report. Finally, she spoke to local media after she was unable to get any answers.

If it was one of her neighbours, Livingston says she would take the opportunity to speak to them about her son and the difficulties he faces.
