Toronto Mayor John Tory is poking fun at comments he made Wednesday calling rapper Kanye West a “proud product” of the city’s music industry.
West was born in Atlanta and grew up in Chicago.
In a video posted to the mayor’s Facebook page with the caption “Yeezus, can’t believe I didn’t know Kim Kardashian’s husband wasn’t Canadian!,” the mayor is seen entering the city’s subway with headphones on, with West’s track “Stronger” playing.
Sporting a suit and a cap with a red maple leaf, Tory gets on a train and flips through a newspaper. He stops short when opening a page to find a recent Rolling Stone magazine issue featuring Kim Kardashian West, wife of Kanye, on the cover.
A few hours after being posted to Facebook the video had racked up nearly 1000,000 views.
The video shows the lighter side of Tory and how social media savvy he and his team are.

The video ends with the mayor standing in front of a large TORONTO sign installed at Nathan Phillips Square for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. Holding the Rolling Stone magazine as he gives a thumbs up.
Meanwhile, debate rages over Kanye West’s planned performance at the Pan Am Games closing ceremony, with a Change.org petition urging he be replaced as headliner. The petition’s page is pushing for homegrown talent to be featured, instead of an American artist.
