REGINA – An advisory for the potential of blue-green algae blooms forming in Saskatchewan water bodies has been issued. Officials with the province say there have been reports of it forming in some areas.
Blue-green algae blooms typically occur in shallow lakes and reservoirs during calm, hot weather. The recent warm weather in the province may result in the quick formation of the algae blooms.

Blooms may be blue-green, bright blue, grey or tan in colour, may last up to three weeks and can be pushed around by the wind.

People are being advised to avoid direct and any intended or unintended consumption of any surface water where blooms are occurring. Caution should also be exercised in consuming fish or shellfish where blooms exist.
Consumption of algae containment water can cause red skin, sore throats, cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Pet owners and livestock producers should also keep their animals away from the water.
