No word on how long clean up will take in Chestermere after flooding

WATCH ABOVE: Chestermere residents continue to dry out and clean after a flash flood over the weekend that left more than 300 homes damaged. Gary Bobrovitz reports.

CALGARY – People living in the city of Chestermere, east of Calgary, are cleaning up after a weekend storm that caused serious flooding.

The intense summer storm on Sunday morning brought heavy rain that batted the city, flooding roads, parking lots and basements.

The City of Chestermere says upwards of 300 homes were affected by the storm after about 200 millimetres of rain fell Sunday morning. Flash flooding quickly turned streets into rivers, leaving cars stranded in water.

The Director of Emergency Management for Chestermere said Monday the level of damage is still being assessed, along with cost estimates and how long the clean up will take.

“The city is now in recovery stage following yesterday’s severe storm and subsequent flooding,” said Steve Bagley. “The city is working with its partners and assisting agencies in facilitating the cleanup process.

The force of the flood water damaged homes, fences, and even collapsed sidewalks. Many homeowners are gutting their basements in a scene reminiscent of the 2013 flooding in Calgary.

City crews have been kept busy clearing clogged drains and attempting to clear catch basins and debris.

Tap water in the city remains safe to drink as water quality hasn’t been impacted. However, officials are asking residents to try to use less water to help slow the flow to sewers.
