MONTREAL – More than 1,300 cyclists geared up for the 7th edition of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer  in Montreal on Saturday.

The ride takes cyclists on a two-day trek from Montreal to Quebec City.

That’s over 200 km, but for most it’s not about the distance.

Darren Costello, a six-time participant in the event, first entered in 2009 when his wife was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

He says the ride has been his way to support her and others facing the disease.

This year as he crosses the finish line he’s looking forward to seeing his healthy wife as she celebrates four years post-chemotherapy.

Participants in this year’s tour helped raise over $4.9 million for cancer research.

Touted as Quebec’s largest cycling fundraiser, the Ride to Conquer cancer has raised more than $41 million dollars since it started seven years ago.

The funds support cancer research, treatment, care and prevention programs at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and partners across the province.
