KELOWNA – It was reported as a dog theft but it may have been a dog rescue.

A puppy taken from the bed of a pickup truck at the Kelowna Costco parking lot has been reunited with its owners.

A family from Kamloops left their english setter “Bailey” in their truck while they went inside the store to shop.

Witnesses later told the family a man had taken the dog and provided a description of the suspect.

The next day, police located the man who claimed he took Bailey home because the puppy was in distress and he intended to take it to the SPCA.

“It was truly rewarding to be able to locate and return Bailey to his family in such a short period of time. Bailey was obviously a beloved part of their family who were all extremely ecstatic to have him return home, says RCMP Cst. Wyatt Wright.

Police are not recommending charges in the case.

Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey says “If you see a dog, who you believe may be in distress inside a vehicle on a hot day, the Kelowna RCMP would like to remind the public to do the following:

· ask nearby stores to page their customers;
· call the BC SPCA Animal Cruelty Hotline at 1-855-6BC-SPCA (1-855-622-7722);
· call your local animal control;
· or contact your local police department;

“Please don’t take matters into your own hands and leave the scene with the animal,” says O’Donaghey.
