Manitoba veterinarians won’t crop dogs’ ears

WINNIPEG – Manitoba veterinarians will no long crop the ears of dogs for cosmetic purposes.

The Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association now has a bylaw making the procedure illegal.

The Winnipeg Humane Society, which has a similar policy, supports the move.

Both groups believe there are no medical benefits to ear cropping, and feel it is inhumane and could lead to serious ear infections.

The procedure requires full anesthesia, splints and tape to hold the ears in the desired upright position.

Breeds commonly subjected to ear cropping include Great Danes, Dobermans, schnauzers, boxers and miniature pinschers.

Ear cropping was banned in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1978.

Veterinary medical associations in British Columbia and Alberta are considering a similar bylaw.
