CALGARY- Police have charged 29-year-old Joshua Burgess with second-degree murder in connection to the death and disappearance of Shannon Madill (Burgess).

Madill was last seen on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014 at her home on Spiller Road.

The two were married in May of 2014 and living together.

Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm said police found the body on Friday.

“Obviously a body was located within a residence and it’s now six or seven months old, there would’ve had to have been some form of concealment for sure,” Sgt. Chisholm said.

There was no history of domestic conflict or domestic violence whatsoever in Burgess’ and Madill’s relationship.

“We obviously obtained enough information to lead us from a missing persons investigation to a homicide investigation and as a result of steps taken we were able to recover her body and lay charges,” Sgt. Chisholm said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

There were no other suspects in relation to the disappearance of Shannon.

“He (Burgess) was somewhat cooperative but obviously we got to the point where we recovered the body and laid charges against him here yesterday, so he was cooperative recently and he appeared to be cooperative initially.”

John Mysocki is a neighbour who has lived a few doors down from the house for two years and said he would see Burgess a few times a week.

“This guy looks like nothing has happened. Like, a missing wife. You should be feeling something. You should feel bad. It’s not normal. I see this guy like every week a couple times. And he’s a normal guy,” Mysocki said. “I came home from work and saw lots of cops over here. I saw lots of tarps in the garden. “

Shannon’s friend, Dustin Milne, knew her for five or six years and said she was a very outgoing person.

“She was always trying to make people laugh. Just bring a smile to everybody’s day,” Milne said. ” The family had a lot of hope for the first month and after that, they always had hope that she had just picked up and gone to Toronto to pursue acting. But it was very unlike her to be out of touch with her family, so I think part of them always knew what would happen.”

Milne says Shannon’s husband being charged for her murder is a shock to everyone that knew them.

“He was just quiet and almost unplugged. Nothing that really hinted he was anything more than a grieving husband. So getting that news was obviously a big shock to everybody,” Milne said. “Today they are relieved that the body has been recovered, so that this is coming to a close so they can have some closure. We can move forward with a funeral service, not that it’s going to make it any easier.”

“The back of my mind, I kind of figured that this is what would’ve been the outcome.”
