WATCH: Global News viewer Tara Brooks submitted dramatic footage of officials responding to a roadside fire behind Woodgrove Mall in Nanaimo.
A small brush fire near the Island Highway has been mostly contained by Nanaimo Fire Rescue.
It broke out around 2 p.m. this afternoon behind the Michael’s store and co-op gas station on Mary Ellen Drive, less than 150 feet from gas pumps.
Three fire engines have been fighting the three-acre fire all afternoon, and it is now 90 per cent contained.
Traffic on the Island Highway is restricted northbound to a single lane. Nanaimo Fire Rescue is asking drivers to use 19A heading north for the time being.
There is no word on the fire’s cause.
