The Centex employee pursued the suspect, who dropped the till before fleeing the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle.

The suspect is still at large and is described as standing about five feet eight inches tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a ski mask at the time of the attempted robbery.

No weapon was reported at the scene, but police said chasing suspects is not something employees should do as it’s hard to tell if suspects are carrying weapons.

The incident comes about a month after a northwest-area Centex employee was struck by a car while trying to prevent a gas-and-dash. Thirty-five-year-old Maryam Rashidi’s death raised questions about the responsibilities of station employees and renewed calls for mandatory pre-payment for gas.

Centex denied  staff were forced to pay for lost gas, saying “Centex policy is for management to absorb the loss” in a June statement.
