WATCH: A star scientist has come to UBC from Harvard, and you might be surprised at one of the reasons she came.
Jennifer Hoffman doesn’t officially start her new post at the University of British Columbia until next month, but the noted quantum physicist is already familiarizing herself with B.C.’s largest campus.
The former Harvard professor was named as the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Quantum Materials and Devices Based on Oxide Heterostructures.

Hoffman had a list of top-flight universities she could’ve gone to, but chose UBC’s Vancouver campus because of the team of leading-edge quantum matter researchers at the school’s Dept. of Physics and Astronomy.
“I was looking for two things in a school. I was looking for a place where there was a great, collaborative environment and I was looking for a place where there were great running trails,” said Hoffman. “Vancouver really came out top on both.”
Hoffman is an avid runner–she once ran almost five consecutive marathons in a single day. She’s also a mother of three young kids.
In her new quantum physics lab, which is currently under construction, she hopes to develop a 3D printer that will produce new quantum materials.
