Montreal compost controversy

MONTREAL – Residents and community groups in the St. Michel neighbourhood want Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay to cancel plans to build a compost-treatment centre at the Complexe environnemental de St. Michel.

They say the proposed compost centre would bring too much truck traffic and pollution to the neighbourhood, where residents for years had to put up with smells and noise from the Miron quarry and garbage dump.

Montreal plans to build four compost-treatment centres on the island – in St. Michel, Dorval, Montreal East and LaSalle – to turn kitchen and yard waste into compost and biofuels.

Public hearings were held into the proposed sites last fall, and the city’s public-consultation body is to submit its report to the city by the end of February.
