Maple Leafs select forward Mitch Marner fourth overall at the NHL Draft

SUNRISE, Fla. – Mitch Marner is the newest face of the Toronto Maple Leafs rebuild after being selected in the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday night.

The five-foot-11 Marner was selected fourth overall.

A forward for the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, Marner finished second in OHL scoring with 126 points in 63 games, behind Dylan Strome.

Strome was selected third overall by the Arizona Coyotes.

Toronto held the 24th pick, but traded it to the Philadelphia Flyers for the 29th and 61st selections. The Leafs then swapped the 29th pick to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 34th and 68th selections, which take place on Saturday.

Toronto will draft nine players on the second day of the draft.

Toronto had originally acquired the 24th selection in a trade with the Nashville Predators for defenceman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelli on Feb. 15.

The Maple Leafs also got veteran forward Olli Jokinen and prospect Brendan Leipsic in that deal.
