Samsung unveils ‘see-through’ truck aimed at making roads safer

TORONTO – Passing a semi-truck on a two-lane road is a dangerous driving maneuver, but Samsung is aiming to make the move safer with a “transparent” truck.

Samsung has showed off a prototype for a vehicle dubbed the “Safety Truck” – a semi-truck with a wireless camera mounted on the front, displaying the road ahead on a screen attached to the back of the truck.

The idea is vehicles behind the truck would be able to see what was coming up on the road ahead of them and pass safely if they wanted to get in front of the truck.

In addition to making passing safer, Samsung said drivers could use the display – made up of four screens on the back of the truck – to monitor conditions ahead of the truck and avoid emergency braking.

But, some have argued the truck’s screens would create more of a distraction for drivers and risk them relying too much on the screens.

Samsung’s Argentinian division, which was testing the technology, said the truck isn’t operational anymore. However, the company is currently working with government and non-government safety agencies to develop the tech further.
