Calgary senior beaten, robbed by suspects in stolen Green Drop truck

WATCH: Calgary police are investigating a bizarre robbery attempt of a man in his late 70s. The senior was beaten by two men posing as lawn care workers. Gary Bobrovitz reports.

CALGARY – Two men in a stolen Green Drop truck pulled up to a house in the city’s southwest Monday morning and then beat and robbed the elderly homeowner.

The men offered to fertilize the homeowner’s lawn when they arrived at the house in Calgary’s Millrise community at around 11:30 a.m.

Witnesses said one suspect was wearing a mask that would be typical of lawn care workers using fertilizers.

The elderly resident’s son said his father, who is in his late 70s,  refused the offer, saying he never called the lawn care company.

“The men were nondescript, they seemed like ordinary-type workers that may’ve been working for Green Drop,” said neighbour Garry Odbert. “But they had like a white cloth across their face, so I thought it was sort of strange they were here, if they were spraying and they had that type of cloth on their face.”

“They threw a couple of backpacks in the back of the truck, and quickly jumped in their vehicle, and drove off very quickly.”

Police and witnesses say the men then grabbed the homeowner and started to beat him; the suspects told him they had a gun.

The man’s house was ransacked and a number of items were stolen. His attackers then fled the scene in the truck.
