EDMONTON — An Edmonton police officer required medical attention after being cut by a hatchet during an altercation early Monday morning. Around 1 a.m., police were called to check out suspicious activity around some parked vehicles near 96 Street and 104 Avenue.

Officers arrived to find a makeshift homeless camp near a path by the LRT tracks. A man was found lying on the ground with a hatchet holstered to his lef. Police said one of the officers was attacked when he approached the man.

The officer suffered cuts to his hand and a wound to his thigh. The alleged assailant was also injured with one of the weapons.  Both men required stitches, but neither injury was life-threatening.

The suspect is in custody and charges are pending.
