Over 10,000 lace up in 37th annual Manitoba Marathon

Winnipeg — Thousands experienced the adrenaline rush of a lifetime – racing in the Manitoba Marathon Sunday morning.

The University of Manitoba was packed with those lacing up and racing.  653 runners signed up for the full 26.2 miles while 2910 people registered for the half marathon, running 13.1 miles.

In total, 10,223 people took part in the 37th Annual Manitoba Marathon.

Also, a record breaking day for a Winnipeg man at the Manitoba Marathon.  Abduselam Yussuf won the men’s half marathon, setting a course record of 1:05:28.  That’s 2 minutes faster than the old record.

A Kenyan man crossed the finished line first in the men’s full marathon for the second time.  It took Thomas Omvenga 2:34:17 to run 26.2 miles, finishing roughly two minutes faster than last year’s winner.  In second place, Winnipeg’s Bradley Keefe, with a time of 2:36:55.

Omwenga also won the Manitoba Marathon in 2012. He trains in Hamilton, Ontario.

For the women, Grand Fork’s Heather Magill, formerly of Calgary took home first place. She finished in 2:54:24.

Winnipeg’s Reesa Simmonds was more then 10 minutes back, bringing home second with a time of .3:04:32 .   The 34-year-old wins not only her first Manitoba Crown in her first race here, but it was also her first even Marathon title.
