KELOWNA – With predictions of a long, hot summer and the resulting risk of interface fires, Okanagan residents are encouraged to have a “Grab and Go” kit at the ready.
The coordinator of the Regional Emergency Program in the central Okanagan says being prepared in advance helps reduce stress when an evacuation order is issued.
“By taking a few simple steps now, when you and your family are not under the pressure of the clock, you can better prepare to face a range of emergencies anytime, anywhere. You should be ready to cope on your own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency,” says Kelowna Deputy Fire Chief Travis Whiting.

The kit should include important documents, medications, flashlight and radio with extra batteries.
“Canned or dried food and at least two litres of water per person per day should be a part of your emergency kit. It’s a good idea to replace these items with fresh stock at least once a year,” says Whiting.
People are also encouraged to prepare a family emergency plan.
As part of the plan there are several things you should discuss with your family:
· How will you contact each other in an emergency? Where will you meet if you can’t go home?
· How does your children’s school/day care communicate with families during an emergency?
· Is there someone in your neighbourhood who may be at risk and need extra help during an emergency?
