British woman ‘sorry’ for posing naked on Malaysian mountain

WATCH: Two Canadians are in a Malaysian jail after they posed naked and behaved badly on top of a sacred mountain in Malaysia. As Mike Drolet reports, it’s a reminder that when you’re a tourist, offending the locals can land you in big trouble.

LONDON – The father of a British woman who is detained in Malaysia for posing naked for photos on a mountain says she knows what she did was “stupid and disrespectful” and is sorry for the offence she has caused to Malaysians.

Eleanor Hawkins, 24, was among four Western tourists detained in Malaysia’s Sabah state this week. The tourists were believed to be part of a group of 10 who stripped naked at Mount Kinabalu on May 30.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan has blamed the foreigners’ “disrespect to the sacred mountain” for a deadly earthquake at the mountain on Friday.
