Recent string of violence against Canadian tourists in Mexico not keeping snowbirds away

The vicious attack on Calgarian Sheila Nabb in Mazatlan is just the latest in a string of violent incidents involving Canadian visitors to Mexico. And while the violence may be painting a black mark on the country’s tourism industry, it doesn’t seem to be enough to deter some Canadians from traveling there.

Edmonton travel agent Nick Brown says Mexico has always been a popular hotspot for snowbirds looking to get away, but the latest incident has sparked some concerns.

“We haven’t had any cancellations…but what we’ve had is people coming in, starting to question whether to go to Mexico.”

Brown says generally travel to Mexico destinations are safe. Like any other place, though, it’s important to exercise caution.

And travellers we spoke to, while not very worried about their safety, will be doing exactly that.

Edmontonian Courtney Wold, who’s on her way to the Mayan Riviera with her family, says she’ll be practicing the buddy system.

Jennifer Bishop, who will be vacation in Cancun, will also be taking some common-sense precautions.

“You don’t go down the back alley, don’t go down the certain areas they’d say not to go,” she says, adding “I wouldn’t go off the beaten path, that’s for sure.”

Stefanie Wold admits it’s sad that people can’t go on vacation anymore without being scared.

“But that’s kind of how things are these days. It can happen in Cancun, it can happen in an elevator in Edmonton,” she says. “It doesn’t matter where you go in the world. There’s bad people everywhere, there’s good people everywhere. You just hope you don’t cross paths with the wrong one.”
