Police say Derek Kehler, a Manitoba musician who lived in Vancouver, and Australian girlfriend Helena Curic, died in a cabin outside Sydney Monday.
“It appears that they had some makeshift heater inside the cabin and there wasn’t any ventilation,” said Detective Inspector Suzanne Rode-Sanders of New South Wales police. “As a result of that, they may have asphyxiated from carbon monoxide poisoning.”
She said the coroner will be looking to confirm the cause of death.
Kehler and Curic, who met in Vancouver, were enjoying a getaway in the town of Kurrajong, located in the Blue Mountains. They appeared to have taken a metal cooking pot filled with coals from a bonfire and brought it inside to keep warm as they slept.

Curic’s family members discovered the bodies at about 7 a.m.
Kehler grew up in Manitoba and lived in Vancouver, where he performed under the name Steel Audrey.
According to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Kehler and Curic met at a Vancouver IT firm and moved to the company’s Sydney office.
