WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg police officer has been charged with impaired driving.
An RCMP officer in Kilcona Park noticed a man “who appeared to be intoxicated” get into a pickup truck, drive a short distance and then exit the vehicle on June 1 at about 9:15 p.m.
“The RCMP officer who had observed this occurrence approached the male, and it was determined he was intoxicated. He was placed under arrest for impaired operation of a motor vehicle,” the RCMP said in a release late Tuesday afternoon.
RCMP say the suspect is Darren Murphy, 46, who lives in the RM of Springfield and is a Winnipeg police officer. He had almost three times the legal limit of blood alcohol content, RCMP said.
Murphy has been released from custody pending a court appearance, RCMP said.
A Winnipeg police service spokesperson could not be reached Tuesday afternoon for comment on the charge. It’s not known how long Murphy has been a member of the Winnipeg police service.
