EDMONTON — A fatality inquiry into the death of a woman who was crushed at the Big Valley Jamboree six years ago began on Monday.
On Aug. 1, 2009, a severe storm caused a stage structure to collapse at the country music festival near Camrose, killing Donna Moore, 35, and injuring several others.
Several charges were laid against three companies involved with the festival. Those charges were stayed in 2012.
The Crown said there was no reasonable chance of conviction against Panhandle Productions, Global Production Co. and a numbered Alberta company.
The inquiry into Moore’s death is expected to last until Wednesday.
Witnesses at the inquiry described what felt like a wall of wind hitting Big Valley Jamboree grounds.
Police who oversaw site security testified they and promoters decided to evacuate. But, within minutes, 90 km/h winds hit.
Officers testified that since then, the Jamboree has hired its own meteorologist for the event.
