EDMONTON — A man driving a motorcycle and his female passenger were killed, and the driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured in a crash east of Edmonton, on the Yellowhead Highway near Ardrossan.

Strathcona County RCMP said around 8:15 p.m. a 75-year-old woman in an SUV was driving north on Highway 830/Range Road 215 when it approached Highway 16. Police believe the SUV stopped at a stop sign before driving into the intersection to continue north. At that point it crossed into the path of a motorcycle traveling east on the Yellowhead.

The 53-year-old man driving the motorcycle died on scene, and the 51-year-old woman on the back of the bike was seriously injured. She was taken to hospital in Edmonton, where she died late Sunday night. The senior driving the SUV was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to a city hospital, where on Monday morning she remained in serious condition.

Police are still investigating, but said alcohol does not appear to have been a contributing factor. The identities of those involved are not being released.

This was the second fatal motorcycle crash in Edmonton this past weekend, after a 30-year-old woman died on Saturday night in west Edmonton. Police said the woman was riding with a group of motorcyclists, when she lost control on the northbound exit at Yellowhead Trail and Anthony Henday Drive.
