WINNIPEG – The province will propose new penalties for distracting driving and impaired driving, Global News has learned.

The new measures could include more demerits for drivers caught using a handheld device behind the wheel.

“The (Justice) minister will introduce sweeping changes,” a spokesperson said Wednesday afternoon. The legislative amendments are set to be tabled in the Legislature Thursday afternoon.

Police and road safety advocates have said the existing penalties for distracted driving have not been enough to stop drivers from talking and texting on handheld devices behind the wheel.

Currently, drivers caught talking or texting get a $200 fine and have 2 demerits put on their license. The changes will likely include more demerits, and possibly a higher fine.

The province will also add to its ability to suspend the licenses of impaired drivers.
