Montreal mayor in New York City to drum up support for return of MLB

WATCH: Montreal mayor Denis Coderre is on a mission in New York to meet with the MLB about bringing baseball back to Montreal. Global’s Caroline Plante reports.

NEW YORK – Denis Coderre will meet with the commissioner of Major League Baseball in New York today as the Montreal mayor pursues the dream of having the sport return to his city.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Coderre will have a one-on-one encounter with Rob Manfred early this afternoon and is then scheduled to hold a news conference.

The mayor said earlier this month he wanted to show Manfred just how much Montreal loves baseball.

The meeting comes after a second successful exhibition series involving the Toronto Blue Jays this year that drew large crowds to the Olympic Stadium.

Montreal has been without a franchise since the Expos last played in 2004.

Manfred said recently that the interest shown by Montreal meant the city had successfully passed the first test toward a return of baseball but that it would have to meet several other criteria, including a proper baseball stadium.
