REGINA – The City of Regina continues to struggle with its water supply and is renewing its call for voluntary water rationing.

The city has seen a small decline in water use since asking residents to limit use earlier in the week, but would like to see residents use 25 per cent less water in their daily use.

The city will be doing its part by not filling any outdoor pools, turning on spray pads, watering parks with city water and holding off on street cleaning.

“We have stepped up the request because we are not seeing the improvement from the supply system at the moment,” said Pat Wilson, director of water works for City of Regina.

Regina has also asked some larger businesses in the city who consume lots of water to try and reduce their water use.

City officials say residents may see some discolouration in water from the eight wells that were opened up earlier this week to keep up with water usage in the city, but say the water is safe to drink.

Last month the city said it was using powdered activated carbon to reduce the foul taste and odour reported by some residents and that the issue should be resolved within a few weeks.

Several years of wet weather and increased runoff has produced high levels of algae in Buffalo Pound lake has impacted the water treatment for the city this summer.

The city has no plans for mandatory water rationing, but says it may be forced to consider that option if water condition and usage rates don’t improve.

Just down the road in Moose Jaw they are also encouraging residents to conserve water.
