Watch Above: Donna and Leo Vaughan describe surviving a landslide that knocked their home off of its foundation and the impact of a recent break-in.

NEAR SICAMOUS – A Shuswap couple whose home was destroyed by a landslide in February have suffered another setback. Donna and Leo Vaughan say a building, where they are storing the personal possession they were able to salvage from their house, was broken into over the May long-weekend.

The storage building is on the same property as the Vaughan’s destroyed home.

“I just don’t understand how somebody looking at this house has enough guts to turn around and still break-in,” says Donna Vaughan.

According to the couple, a lot of things are missing including tools, bikes, skies and personal clothing. They are now worried they will be targeted by thieves again and they plan to move into a building on the property as soon as electricity is reconnected.

“[I] stood on the floor and hung onto walls. The house was moving. We figured [it moved] about 30 feet. ” says Donna recalling that harrowing night. “ [I] hollered for [Leo] and he was in the kitchen. The house is split right in half. It is buckled right in half. He was on one side and I was on the other.”

The pair was able to ride out the mudslide, that pushed their house off of its foundation, and escape the building by themselves. Leo Vaughan says the landslide was pretty devastating.

“We had a beautiful living-room. I sat and looked out at the lake. This was my retirement and it is not there anymore,” he says.
