Nova Scotia town of Canso will dissolve on July 1 and join Guysborough

CANSO, N.S. – The Nova Scotia town of Canso will be amalgamated with the Municipality of the District of Guysborough on July 1.

The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board has approved Canso’s application to dissolve its incorporation and join the municipality.

In the decision, the board added one district to Guysborough council, increasing it to eight from seven.

Mayor Frank Fraser will be Canso’s representative on the council between the town’s dissolution and municipal elections in October.

Canso was once a bustling fishing port but fell on hard times with the decline of groundfish stocks and the closure of a local fish plant.
