One dead after accident at Stanley Park Seawall

An accident at a party in Stanley Park has left one person dead.

Crews were called to an area near Siwash Rock around 4:20 a.m. Sunday and a section of the Seawall was closed for much of the morning.

Vancouver police say they believe a 23-year-old man was attending an all-night party in a secluded area of Stanley Park when he fell down the cliffs to his death. They say at this time the death appears to be accidental.

An estimated 200 people were taking part in the party. They made their way into a secluded area above the Siwash Rock area. A Vancouver Park Board spokesperson said park rangers had no advance knowledge of the unsanctioned party and that the board will be working with police during the investigation.

The fatality raises questions about what can be done about safety in the park, particularly with regards to all-night parties.

“We do try to track these things,” said Vancouver Park Board Malcolm Bromley. “If we catch wind that there’s an unauthorized party or rave of some sort planned through social media, we try to intervene. It is of concern to us, but we certainly don’t welcome unauthorized events of this size or magnitude or nature in the park overnight.
“We do have private security contracted to look at our buildings in the park each night. But with 1,000 acres, a very complex network of trails and roads, it’s very difficult to supervise the entire park.”

Police are working with the Coroners Service to confirm the cause of death and determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The incident marks the second time in less than a year that someone has suffered a fatal fall in the area.

Last July, a 22-year-old UBC student died after a fall onto the Seawall in Stanley Park.
