SPALLUMCHEEN – Thursday morning’s commute in the North Okanagan took a little longer than usual but not because of extra traffic or an accident blocking the road. This delay was caused by an alpaca on the loose. Vehicles were forced to carefully maneuver around the animal as it wandered around on Highway 97A at Pleasant Valley Road in Spallumcheen near Armstrong.
RCMP got a call shortly after 8 a.m. to help get the alpaca off the road. Officers managed to corral the animal in a yard but it escaped.
It turns out the alpaca belongs to Valley Auction, where it initially escaped from.
The animal has now sought refuge in the nearby Tolko Mill yard. Valley Auction says the animal is understandably agitated after the morning ordeal. The company says it will take someone with good roping skills to catch the alpaca. If anyone can manage to do so, Valley Auction says the alpaca is theirs free of charge.
