MONTREAL – On Tuesday, Gérald Tremblay, mayor of Montreal, Marc Parent, Montreal police chief and Michel Labrecque, head of the Société de transports de Montréal, unveiled plans for a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on social and racial profiling.
Racial or social profiling is when a person is discriminated against based on race or economic background.
Last year, the Quebec Human Rights Commission published a damning report detailing instances of racial profiling by police forces and other agencies.

In the first six months of 2011, the commission received 21 complaints about racial profiling. Ten involved Montreal police.
Tremblay said that the new measures came out of discussions with community groups and agencies such as the Quebec Human Rights Commission, which sought changes in the way police conduct themselves and who should police the police when something goes wrong.
Criticism aside, the police chief said he believes Montreal has actually been doing a pretty good job compared with other Canadian and U.S. cities. What is your experience?
